CraigCraig Wanless, Camp Coordinator,

To live life with joy, peace, purpose and passion. And laughing all the way. Music speaks to me and makes me feel alive and dance awakens my soul. Life is about experiences. And what better way to experience life and something new and exciting then to do it with friends, all committed to the same purpose. As a teen I certainly looked for this. I sought it out in back alley break dance crews, gangs, the rave culture and anywhere else I thought I could find myself in. And while I may have felt a part of something, it was a band-aid fix. And the feeling never lasted. Which left me feeling frustrated, angry and alone. I know now that when I'm on purpose and committed to myself, I'm know who I am and I'm pumped to be sharing this amazing experience with all of you and can't wait for camp.

Dean,

My life passion has always revolved around drums of one kind or another. In 1991 I became interested in hand drumming as a way to heal both old and recent wounds. Through good fortune, enthusiasm and some frustrated energy looking for release, I soon began making my own djembe and ashiko drums. I used western hand carving tools and acquired wood of various types from trees that had either recently been cut down or had succumbed to high winds. I am currently working on a project that involves a small group of youth carving their own shells, from a raw piece of tree trunk. When finished, they will each have a drum to play that through hard work, they will have created.

All of the drums I lend to Teen Journey are drums I made in my home shop in North Vancouver. Most of these drums were birthed with the aide of two rather unique vertical lathes that I designed in the late 90’s. The lathes sped up the process of carving the shells. Still, however, what I love most is making shells that I carve by hand.

I facilitate hand drumming workshops for a variety of youth and adult groups. This year, I am proud to be a member of ArtStarts - a government organization that helps connect BC schools with artists who teach and perform.

Along with hand drumming, I also discovered the healing powers of mythopoetic story-telling during the early 1990’s. Through attending workshops and reading works by Joseph Campbell, Michael Meade, Clarrissa Pinkola Estes, Robert Bly and Marion Woodman, I learned first hand how old stories can help open one up to a fuller emotional life. I first began telling old stories, while drumming, in 1999. Since then, story-telling has become my second great passion. I began working with youth, as a story-teller, in 2002 at Peak House in Vancouver – a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre for youth. In 2004 I began doing the same type of work at the Burnaby Youth Detention Centre. I continue to volunteer my time at Peak House and BYDC as well as working professionally with a variety of youth and adult groups throughout the Lower Mainland.

Leaders & Teachers from Previous Teen Journey

Malidoma Somé, PhD,

is one of today’s most eloquent champions of indigenous wisdom. His life and teaching form a bridge between the traditional ways of his people, the Dagara of West Africa – among whom he is an initiated elder – and the modern world. He is a gifted medicine man and diviner, as well as a compelling teacher and author. See Video interview.

Before his birth, in 1956, the elders of Malidoma’s village knew that his purpose in coming into this world was to carry the message of indigenous technology and spirituality to the western world, a place where modernity was growing increasingly hungry for a reconnection to ancient wisdom.  Little did he know, as a young child, stolen from his family and village, that the years he would spend under the harsh tutelage of the religious order would prepare the way for the eventual challenge of integrating old and new, the sacred and the mundane.

For more than twenty years, Malidoma has shared the ancient knowledge of his tribe with people in the West who are increasingly disconnected from their ancestors, spirit, and the richness of life in community. His voice awakens in our hearts the recognition that we are all born with a life purpose to fulfill and that we can do so in a deep and abiding relationship with all beings.  Dr. Somé is the author of several books, including Ritual: Power, Healing and Community, The Healing Wisdom of Africa, and his acclaimed autobiography, Of Water and the Spirit. He was initiated to the tradition as a youth, and received initiations inner other mystical schools as well. When Juan mentions his teachers, he names the Golden Eagle as  his guide and invisible Teacher.
Before choosing to teach what he knew, he made the decision to prepare himself in diverse mystical and philosophical theories and attended different institutions that     offered him knowledge of what is  Man in relation to Spirit. His work is mainly focused in the study and experimentation of the spiritual nature of the Human Being.  This way the intention of the ceremonies is to contact  the INNER BEING, and from that space, navigate through the three worlds that are contained in our inner universe. The spectrum of experience from this intention makes it profoundly integrating and transforming.

Since 1992, he has been coordinating a program of preservation and diffusion of the Tibetan culture by means of world tours of Tibetan Monastic Universities, such as a Gaden Shartse and Keusantg Rimpoche located in India, from the Gelugpa lineage, presented by the Department of Religion and Culture of Tibet in exile headed by the H.H. Dalai Lama.
He also works in the conservation and diffusion of the values of the Andean-Amazonian culture through the great Q´eros nation, last Inca community discovered in Cuzco, Peru in  1955.  He guides  mystical and eco-shamanic trips to sacred enclaves located in USA, Egypt, India, Nepal, Tibet, Mexico and Peru.
He coordinates the International Committee of the Flag of Peace (NGO of the United Nations) in Jalisco, Mexico. For 25 years has been actively proposing and promoting October 27th as the worldwide day of Inner Peace.

Creator of the Pneuma System: The way of the Knowledge, a system with psychological and spiritual teachings, as well as a breathing technique, designed on the basis of his study and experience of the wisdom of the Eastern and Western cultures, though mainly by the internally received lessons from the "Golden Eagle".
